June 16, 2017

On September 15, 1963, a bomb exploded at the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, killing four young girls and injuring many others. Survivor Sarah Collins Rudolph, Washington Post editor and author of Kennedy and King Steven Levingston, and Philadelphia Orchestra composer-in-residence Hannibal Lokumbe discussed how the bombing impacted the meaning of “equality” in America and how local events can bring about constitutional change.

Jeffrey Rosen, president and CEO of the National Constitution Center, moderated. A special performance by Lokumbe preceded the discussion.

This program was presented as part of a three-day series of community events in collaboration with The Philadelphia Orchestra, Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, and the Painted Bride.
